How often should I have a quiet time?
Jesus spent time with God everyday praying for God’s direction. Following Jesus’ example, you should aim for a daily quiet time.
What if I miss a day?
In the high pace world we live in, chances are you will miss a quiet time every once in a while. Just don’t let it become a habit. If you miss a meal you don’t stop eating, you just get a double helping at the next meal. If you miss a quiet time, just pick it up again the next day.
Where and when should I have my quiet time?
Since we are easily distracted, pick a time when you’re at your best. If you’re a morning person, then study the Bible in the morning. Find a place away from phones, computers, and TVs so you are less likely to be interrupted.
What should I “do” during my quiet time?
The Bible doesn’t give specific directions on what to do during your quiet time, it simply tells us that we need to spend time with God everyday. However, there are certain things that you will want to include in your quiet time.
- Pray. Acknowledge God’s presence with you. Thank him for his gifts, tell him about your failures and sins, and ask for his guidance and understanding as you study his love letter to you (the Bible).
- Read a passage of the Bible. You’ll want to read the Bible in an organized way (some of the plans below will help you get started). After choosing a passage, read it several times. If possible, read it out loud. (Remember that before the Bible was written on paper it was spoken verbally from generation to generation.)
- Keep a Journal. Respond to God’s word by writing down how you’re challenged, truths to remember, thanksgiving and praise, sins to confess, commands to obey, or any other thoughts you have.
